Loïc Barbaux, BSc, MSc

Doctoral Student

Loic Barbaux obtained his bachelor’s degree in life sciences, specializing in physiology from the Université Claude Bernard in Lyon, France. His interest in the field of neuroscience led him to pursue his university studies at the University of Montreal, Canada, with a microprogram in neuroscience and a master’s degree in neuroscience, obtained in 2021. He joined Concordia University that same year, as a doctoral student in Health and Exercise Sciences, under the supervision of Dr. Dang Vu in the sleep laboratory of the Research Center of the University Institute of Geriatrics of Montreal (CRIUGM). His research work led him to specialize in the study of sleep on EEG recording, the effects of benzodiazepine withdrawal on sleep and cognitive function in the insomniac elderly and sensory stimulation through a « rocking bed » device to improve sleep quality.

My research interests focus on neuroimaging, specifically in the study of EEG tracings related to sleep and its architecture: manual scoring of sleep stages, sleep spindles.
My interests also focus on the study of sleep spindles and their functions across different populations: healthy and insomniac elderly, and chronically consuming sleeping pills (benzodiazepines).
In addition, my research work focuses on the effect of specific sensory stimulation via a « rocking bed” device as a non-pharmacological treatment of improving sleep quality in healthy adults and elderly peoples.
